Jaguar says it may decide to manufacture in the U.S.

F-Type Roadster has Go-Ahead

Depending on where you live, this may be good news or awful news: Jaguar has announced that it may begin manufacturing 20,000 of its marquee F-type Roadsters (street price: $65,000) in either the U.S. or Germany.

What’s awful about that, at least from the British point of view, is that it would mark the first time that the world-famous carmaker has ever built its autos out of country. On the other hand, since 40% of all new Jaguars are sold in the U.S., the company could considerably cut shipping costs on its flagship model.

The possibility of locating manufacturing in Germany arises from Jaguar’s stated objective of making large inroads into the German market. Thanks to the infusion of American cash, technology and encouragement in the 1990s, Jaguar is now on course to becoming the UK’s largest auto manufacturer at more than 100,000 units per year.

Jaguar says a combination of a weak pound against the euro and the dollar, as well as a lack of manufacturing space in Britain, is what led to the discussion of relocating the F-type’s assembly plant.
